The Sonshine Center seeks to provide an excellent preschool education and high quality early childhood care in a safe, loving Christian environment at an affordable cost. Our program is housed in the first floor education wing of Trinity Covenant Church, at 302 Hackmatack Street, Manchester, CT.

Not-for-Profit:

The center is a not-for-profit corporation operating under the guidance of a Board of Directors whose function is to determine the policies of the program. Our staff consists of professional early childhood educators and a director who coordinate the program with the help of well-qualified assistants.

Play-oriented program:

Sonshine's program is play-oriented - a developmentally appropriate practice in high quality early childhood programs. Developmentally appropriate means learning experiences and teaching styles responsive to the age and individual needs and strengths of each child, with respect for every family and culture. What is sometimes referred to as mere "play" actually involves the integration of many new insights and concepts. While at play, children create themes, explore and establish environments, solve problems, and develop shared understandings.

Recognizing Potential:

We see each child as a unique gift from God. Therefore, it is also our aim for every child to recognize his or her own worth and God's special love and care for each one of them.

Classrooms

The preschool classrooms are divided into separate interest centers allowing for fine and gross-motor development, quiet and active times, dramatic play, creative activities, structured and unstructured times. The program is geared to the interests and needs of the preschool child with a curriculum consisting of experiences in math, language arts, science, social studies, art and music. These disciplines are connected through themes, projects, play, learning materials, and other opportunities throughout the day to investigate, contemplate and discover.

Children are free to examine and observe using carefully selected toys and materials. Unstructured play times also provide opportunities for social interaction and building of new interpersonal skills, especially cooperation and conflict resolution, as well as developing independence through freedom of choice.

Language development lays the foundation for children's progress toward literacy. Teachers model conversation as they interact with and respond to children. Group times offer opportunities to engage in finger-plays, songs, rhythm and rhymes as well as developing listening skills. Sonshine has a great collection of wonderful books. We hope to instill a love of books that will help children look forward to becoming proficient readers.
